SHE WAITED OUTSIDE THE HOSPITAL DOOR FOR A MOMENT. There were two glasses of water in her hand, pressing ice into her palms. She turned, the corridor was empty. It was strangely ghostly, just like everything else in that goddamn town. She sighed, some deep noise that had probably been heard on the other side of the door. There was no stopping it then, she pushed her way in. 
He sat slightly hunched, flexing the muscles he certainly hadn't had when all of that started. His hair was longer too, lying partially down his back, he pushed it out of his face with his hands when he turned to look at her. 
Robin had been avoiding the wards and in turn Steve had been trying not to scream. She imagined it had been hard not to. She still recalled how the pain had taken her, a holiday of nightmares that had left her flinching at loud noises for weeks. Steve had whimpered occasionally, he'd broken stuff too, a lamp smashed onto the floor, one of the pillows ripped to shreds. But then he just sat there like a patient waiting for a vaccination. Sat calmly and stared at her. 
"Brought you some water" Robin handed him the glass, "I imagine you need it right about now"
"Yeah" his voice was rather dry. He took large gulps of the water until it was empty and then, because she felt he needed it more than her, she gave him hers alongside it. 
She didn't know how to feel. There sat Steve Harrington, her best friend. The friend that she had grown to rely on, the friend she had lost. It confused her, who he had become and she became aware when she entered the ward that day that she was unsure who he would be. Would he be the clumsy, goofy guy who didn't know how to flirt with girls properly and preferred spending his time with high school freshman's or was he some darker version of himself constructed by the war?
On top of all that, did he loathe her for what he had just been through? Steve had longed for memories and begged for a way back to who he'd once been. Robin had given him this because there had been a time she'd swore she'd give him anything.
Then again, she knew it was selfish. 
She wanted him back, missed him like mad and maybe a part of her had known she wanted to grant his wish because of herself. Aware of the pain aware of the consequence. Maybe she should've warned him more, listened to Hopper. Instead she had dived right in. Instead she had gone ahead with what he asked because in the end she had hoped to open the ward door to see her best friend sat on the end of his bed.

"How do you feel?" Robin asked, taking a seat on the cushion-less armchair. 
"Strange" Steve told her.
"It takes getting used to" Robin told him, "I'm sorry"

"Why are you sorry?"

"I asked you to" Steve said quickly, "I don't regret it... but"
"But what?"
"It wasn't how I imagined it would be"
"How come?" 
"I guess I thought I'd just go back to being who I was" Steve said, "that this character I've been the last couple of years would disappear but that's impossible. I'm still him, I still lived through what he did. His actions were mine, his words were constructed by me... I guess I hoped I could forget it all, go back to a time where I didn't completely loathe every action I made but instead I'm just... a new version of myself"

"But you're not a bad person" Robin stated thickly. 
It was rare she felt she was going to cry. Robin liked to pride herself in not being too emotional. Sure she was anxious as fuck and overthought everything she did, every word she said. She spent half of her life stressing about yesterday and tomorrow and she held a buzzing beehive of words in her mind but she could hold herself together, she didn't break even when everything got too much. 
Yet in that moment she felt it hitting her like a ton of bricks and she really wanted to cry. 
"I don't know who I am" Steve looked up at her, "but I don't like it, I don't think I ever liked it"
"You're Steve Harrington" Robin told him, "you're the guy who helped fight demo dogs to protect kids you hardly knew, who put his life on the line for something you didn't understand. The guy who would religiously keep creepy men away from me, who drove kids anywhere they wanted, who'd spend hours at arcades just for them even though they gave you headaches. Who accepted me for who I am despite everything you've been told. You are not the product of your parents, you are so much more than that"
"Yeah and all of that just went down the fucking drain" Steve hissed. 
"No... no you're just lost"
"Robin" Steve sighed, pressing his fingers into the inner corners of his eyes, "if this proves anything it just shows that some innate part of me is... evil... that I'm not a good person I just pretend to be--"
"That's not how it works" Robin shook her head, "Steve listen to me, you need to ask for forgiveness and I'll be the first to say that. You've fucked up but who hasn't?"
"Define fucked up Robin" Steve said to her, "I think the way I've acted is a little more than a fuck up"

"We're in a war!" Robin exclaimed, "no one's acting rationally"
Steve didn't say anything, she watched him finish the second glass of water and roll the muscles on his back yet again. Robin imagined they still hurt, hers had ached for days. 
"You think I deserve it?" Steve looked up at her. 
"Deserve what?"
"Forgiveness" 
"Yes"
"Are you saying that because you're biased?"
"Does it matter... most of the people who you're asking are biased" Robin shrugged, "these people love you for who you are and not who you've become in the war. Because they know you and they love you. They understand that who you've become is a product of everything bad that's ever happened to you. It's not an excuse Steve, you did things I can't ever agree with but I know you don't agree with them either... that's what makes the difference"
Steve stared at her, recognisable eyes. She got to her feet, a soft smile on he face. He rose too, as though he could see her mind, pulling her into the hug she'd been waiting for. 
"I really coulda done with you in this war" Robin sighed, pressing her chin onto his shoulder as she wrapped her arms around him,

"I know" Steve murmured, "I wish I'd been there... for you, for the kids... for Lily"
"Yeah" Robin whispered. 
"How is she?"
"She hasn't woken up yet" Robin spoke sullenly, "but she's alive and she's like us now... we know that much"
"You think she'll make it?" 
"I don't know what we're gonna do if she doesn't"
They stood there for a little while. Robin thought of how their past selves would ridicule such emotion. Steve and Robin had never been the soft type, the hugging people, the friends who needed to talk about their friendship to remind each other that it was still there. 
"Steve?" 
"Yeah?"
"You need to take a shower, you absolutely stink"
