Major Projects Group has the distinction of undertaking one of the largest demolition projects ever conducted in Australia in the demolition of the Newcastle BHP steelworks. With a value of over $30 million, the BHP steelworks demolition was a complex project, and our Group helped to ensure that it proceeded with minimal risk to workers.

The Newcastle Steelworks was built by BHP in Newcastle, New South Wales. Construction commenced in January 1913, with operations commencing in March 1915. It was officially opened on 2 June 1915 by Governor-General Ronald Munro Ferguson. [1] Newcastle was selected due to its proximity to the Hunter Valley coalfields with the iron ore shipped.

Registrations of Interest are being sought to transform the former steelworks site with innovative new uses, providing a boost for employment and the local economy.
