G-Shaft candy originated in Braidwood, Illinois in the late 1800's. Harriet and William Williamson came to Braidwood in 1872, where William worked as a hoisting engineer at the Chicago & Wilmington Coal Company's "I" shaft. Tragedy struck in September of 1881 when William died from injuries sustained when the engine house roof collapsed.

The candy is now available only at Dan's Candy. Collins said when her parents bought Dan's Candies, they were already selling G-Shaft. But back then, it was available in other locations as well.
