Fruit Description: Juicy fleshy fruit in summer is yellow to orange, tinged with red with a large, rough pit (stone). They are fuzzy with hairs and called peaches. A recessive gene can cause the fruit to be smooth and hairless and they are called nectarines. Generally round or slightly oval and 3 x 3 inches.

At a farm stand in the Sandhills, the peaches come from an orchard right here on the edge of the Uwharries. Growers even note the specific variety. After writing about the Ophir apple last fall, I realized many of our local peach varieties are also named for communities in the region - Candor, Biscoe, Norman, Winblo, Ellerbe and Pekin.

Today, we are looking at a traditional, yellow-fleshed, Southern peach called Winblo. Winblo was developed by North Carolina State University and it was released to the public in 1972. Because it is a public release, it's freely available to propagate. Winblo has melting-flesh and it's also a freestone. In our Clemson University research.

Olpea These flat peaches sound good! I'm going to the state farmer's market tomorrow and get some and see if I can determine the variety. I expect the kids and their families who are picking berries would really like them. Just finished second picking of about half of the Winblo row. Last week we had the first freestone peaches available this season, the Winblo variety from Pee Dee Orchards in the North Carolina sandhills. Peaches are available in North Carolina from mid-May until September. While the full season spans 4 months, there are dozens of varieties of peaches that combine to make up the whole season.
